random ramblings of an unconscious mind
Even though last year’s San Diego Comic Con was the one that “hurt” the most from all the ones i have missed all over the years (for some reason i was very passionate about last year), this year’s schedule is pretty awesome as well…so much so that i think i better start planning my trip for next year so as not to be on the same position as i am now; writing about all the things i would have liked to attend in SDCC 2014.
What i really like about this year’s SDCC is that by looking at its schedule, it seems to be turning back to its roots: the comics. There are numerous panels, workshops, QnAs etc on the subject of how one becomes a writer or comic-book artist, teaching about point-of-view, illustration, comic-book law issues, editing, pitching, digital comics, publicity for small publishers, digital inking techniques, marketing, and other various themes which impressed me and made me wish i was talented at something besides reading (and who am i kidding, i am doing a lazy-ass job at that as well).
If you plan on going to San Diego Comic Con, you should have fixed your perfect schedule by now. Or at least an approximation to what would be ideal, since there are many things happening all at once, it is impossible to go to every single one of them without creating clones or inventing time-traveling device.
Fans returning to SDCC are aware that seating in all event rooms at Comic-Con is on a first-come, first-served basis. Thus the huge 6am lines forming. Because of the sheer number of attendees, simply having a badge does not guarantee a seat in programs and events or an autograph from a specific celebrity. If there is a specific program or presentation you would like to see, it’s always a good idea to plan accordingly and arrive early. For more info on the appropriate way of attending SDCC events go here, cause if it is one thing we geeks know is to follow rules and regulations.
SDCC spans over 22 separate rooms in the Convention Center, ranging from 280 seats to the massive 6,500-seat Hall H, as well as branching out to other locations, so as to better cater the demands of each presentation. There is a wide range of topics covered at SDCC from Jack Black’s web series “Ghost Girls” and paranormal panels to international fans meet and greets, music for comic-books that turned to film, steampunk, feminism, video-games, animation, movie industry, banned comics, even “geek therapy” where psychologists and psychotherapists discuss geek culture and the therapeutic value of comics. All of which are pretty intriguing to say the least. However, the fun does not start and end with SDCC, there are events and happenings in the surrounding area. So have your eyes and ears open if you, as the Aerosmith sing, “not want to miss a thing”.
For example Veronica Mars fans will have the opportunity to attend on Friday 19 July the Comic-Con Panel (11:15am Hall H), Autograph Signing (4pm WB Booth) for which you will require to get one of the 120 wristbands and the Official Fan Event which is open to all fans not only those who have SDCC badges, and will take place at Regal Cinema @ Horton Plaza and will entail a longer chat with E!’s Kristin Dos Santos, and a lot more time for fan questions, as well as some more first-look footage that wasn’t screened at the morning panel. There might also be a few surprises and giveaways. Please note that there will only be about 130 tickets available, and all tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. However, Kickstarter backers who pledged for SDCC rewards will have VIP entrance and guaranteed entry.
Furthermore, Psych fans will be treated the first-ever midnight screening of Psych The Musical in San Diego, CA on Wed, July 17th. This will be a Psych-O party you don’t want to miss, but space is limited (2,500seats) so RSVP now (only one RSVP per person and a Comic Con badge is not required).
I have to admit that i am always a sucker for the TV-series presentations, since it is the fandom i most relate too. So my ideal schedule would be something like this. I really tried to select few stuff cause i know my limitations, i know i am not superman, and i need pee and food breaks. I selected the ones i really wanted to attend, and not all the things that interested me like discussion panels on the topic of science to fiction etc. Some things might be at the same or similar time, but it is good to have back-up options in case you could not get a seat to one of your first options. (following texts are the official panel descriptions from comic-con.org)
Stars Josh Holloway (Lost), Meghan Ory (Once Upon a Time), and Marg Helgenberger (CSI) and executive producers Michael Seitzman (North Country), René Echevarria (Terra Nova, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Tripp Vinson discuss the new CBS dramatic thriller. Leading the elite government cybersecurity agency created to support him is Director Lillian Strand (Helgenberger), a straightforward and efficient boss who oversees the unit’s missions. Strand assigns Riley Neal (Ory), a Secret Service agent, to protect Gabriel from outside threats, as well as from his appetite for reckless, unpredictable behavior and disregard for protocol. As the first supercomputer with a beating heart, Gabriel is the most valuable piece of technology the country has ever created and is the U.S.’s secret weapon. Stars Matt Lanter (90210, Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Aimee Teegarden (Friday Night Lights), and Grey Damon (Secret Circle, Nine Lives of Chloe King), along with executive producers Adele Lim (One Tree Hill), Meredith Averill (The Good Wife), Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec (Mission Impossible, Alias), and Scott Rosenberg (Gone In 60 Seconds, Con Air) invite you to get a first look at the futuristic epic romance tale, Star-Crossed. When an spacecraft crash-landed in Emery’s (Teegarden) small town when she was only 6, whether the aliens came in peace or with more sinister intentions didn’t matter: a fierce battle erupted as humans fought for control over their new rivals, an alien species called the Atrians. In the midst of the conflict, Roman (Lanter), a 6-year-old Atrian boy, found his way to a shed behind Emery’s house, where she protected him from harm. In their brief time together, Emery and Roman forged a deep bond, but the authorities wasted no time tracking Roman down and capturing him. Emery has grown up believing that Roman was killed that day. Ten years later, in 2024, the Atrians have been acclimated to life on Earth, but they are interred in a heavily guarded camp known as the Sector to keep them separate from humans. Now, for the first time, a group of Atrian teens will enroll in a suburban human high school, with the goal of testing the feasibility of human/alien integration. The eyes of the nation and the whole world are fixed on this historical social experiment, an endeavor fraught with suspicion and fear. In the mayhem of the first day, Emery is amazed to learn that Roman was not killed by the authorities and is, in fact, one of the Atrian students. Their childhood bond is quickly rekindled. In a school and a society that distrusts everything about the Atrians, Emery and Roman have found each other again. However, their relationship is threatened by the small-mindedness of their respective communities and the political agendas of people in power. While the world around them rages with anger and prejudice, their bond becomes increasingly strong and increasingly dangerous. As an epic Romeo and Juliet romance unfolds, a violent encounter between their two families could threaten their relationship. Can Roman and Emery’s love-and peace between the species-survive? The cast and producers offer an exclusive first look at the series, followed by a panel discussion.

Buffy the Musical Once More with Feeling
Let’s end this show with a bang! The powers that be behind Whedonopolis and Fandom Charities present a screening of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode Once More with Feeling as Comic-Con’s big closing event! Many say this is the finest, funniest, most ingenious episode ever to come out of the Buffyverse. But remember, the best part of the show is up to you! This episode was made for talkin’ — back, that is — and singing and shouting and dancing in the aisles, with or without your dry cleaning! Audience participation: It isn’t just for Rocky Horror and mob riots anymore.
