On building a Death Star

There is an online petition for the US government to build a real live Death Star – yeah like the one featured in the movies. Almost 30,000 people have signed on. The argument is that “by focusing our defense resources into a space-superiority platform and weapon system such as a Death Star, the government can spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration, and more, and strengthen our national defense.”

My counter arguments are why would anyone be in favor of such a project? First of all we are all aware of its basic design fault – one fire on its core and kaboom! Say that they figure a way around it. If such a technology falls into the wrong hands it could be disastrous for everyone on the planet, or other planets for that matter. Hasn’t anyone been paying attention to history, or movies? “With great power comes great responsibility”. Bad guys will always find a way to manipulate defense systems for their benefit. I am almost considering to make a petition to oppose this endeavor. I deeply hope there are someone of sound mind in the white house who would not grand this request, who will deem it as a very-very bad idea by fan-boys taking films too far.
