random ramblings of an unconscious mind

Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future

Do you ever doubt your memories? Let me demonstrate my train of thoughts. When i was a kid, i vividly remember being in awe with a VHS my older brother (the gamer) rented. It was a cross-breed between a movie and a game. Along with the cassette you got a toy gun, which interacted with the video by shooting lasers on to the screen killing evil bird-like robots.

Well this memory was brought into question whenever a discussion about childhood games and movies was taking place with my peers. Could i possibly have dreamed it, creating a false memory? So i decided to google to the bottom of things. Not knowing the name of the game/movie i tried explaining it to the search engine….vhs game. With little hope i found my answer: Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future.

Alas my memory was vindicated. Watching youtube videos of the show i was reminded of the series (though admittedly the story line and protagonists do not ring a bell). I also felt sad for whomever did not get a chance to experience that as a kid. Even though the series seen from today’s point of view has dreadful effects, at that time it was truly revolutionary.

The series has a DVD release but i am not sure if it will feature the same interactive shooting techniques. There are rumors of its reboot as Phoenix Rising, so if you want to be in the loop for news about the series you can join its Facebook fan page.
