random ramblings of an unconscious mind
If i had to characterize Dan Deacon, i would say that he is a peculiar musician (from what i gather from videos and discussions with people that have been to his shows).
His new album America is available for purchase in various formats, including cassette which i thought was an extinct music medium, out of production. With the occasion of the album release, he will be touring USA and Europe, and has created (with the help of his friends) a free app that allows the public to use their cellphones during his live performances, without the use of wi-fi, thus generating a light show amidst the audience. The app uses “calibration tones” that unlock the apps inner working and make it possible for the performer to communicate from the stage with all the phones running the app in the audience.
Dan Deacon has always involved audience participation in his live shows, cueing them to create dance tunnels for example. This new form of spatial audio-visual environment could very well be a step towards the creation of a variety of apps targeted to concert-goers, utilizing their mobile devices in a way that is meaningful to the performers, incorporating them in the show.
Below you can watch the videoclip of his new song “True Thrush”, as well as the trailer for the app, displaying how it works.
